Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) is a training course that's available to any person in Australia who's willing to work in the liquor industry or in bars that serve alcoholic beverages. After completing the course, graduates are given a special certification that is acknowledged all over Australia. The major elements that are discussed in this certification include responsible marketing and service of alcoholic beverages, restricting clients from drinking past their limits, and assess the nature and disposition of clients before serving them with alcohol.

Excessive Alcohol Consumption has been a problem in our society for hundreds of years. Research now proves the negative health effects excessive alcohol consumption and binge drinking has on the body. Regulatory authorities have finally taken action to ensure that licensed premises and their staff are legally obliged to ensure they are serving alcohol responsibly. The introduction of the Responsible Service of Alcohol certification and RSA Courses in the liquor industry in Australia is a welcomed change. This article will demonstrate just how important it is for licensees and staff to take their responsibilities seriously otherwise the ramifications can be deadly.

Many young people struggle to appreciate the compelling reasons behind the enforcement of the responsible service of alcohol. The need for hospitality management and staff to be aware of the justification for accreditation cannot be overstated. The Hospitality Industry must take responsibility for their patrons, and I intend to show the importance for the health and wellbeing of everyone concerned.

In the past, before the Responsible Serving of Alcohol was enforced, many licensed premises continued to serve alcohol to patrons, regardless of their level of intoxication. This led, in many cases, to violence between patrons, damage to premises and patrons driving home whilst drunk - risking their life and the lives of others on the roads.

In recent times, high levels of intoxication still cause serious threats to the safety of individuals and the wider community. It is a growing epidemic that is damaging the lives of millions worldwide. This is why governmental authorities have stepped in and implemented regulations on the liquor industry.

The Serious Effects Of Alcohol

It is vital that hospitality workers understand the effects alcohol can have on the human body, and how some patrons may react when their capacity has been reached. This can have a flow on effect on the community in many ways - their friends, their families and the wider world in which they live. Recognising the signs of intoxication enables staff to make better judgements on whether to serve or refuse a patron, and learning the ability to deal with intoxicated patrons after refusing service is an invaluable skill which can be used in other areas of working life.
